HomeStorage boxes & racks

Garden tool storage: box, shed or wall rack?

Choose storage around the kit you own, the space you can spare and how often you need access.

A storage box suits a small collection that can lie flat. A tall tool store makes more sense for rakes and spades. A walk-in shed earns its footprint when you need to retrieve a mower without unloading everything else. Wall racks improve an existing dry store; they don't provide shelter on their own.

Your main need Start with Check before ordering
Hand tools, pots and small accessories Low storage box Internal dimensions and lid clearance
Long-handled tools in a narrow garden Tall tool store Usable height below the roof
Mower, bike and mixed equipment Shed or wide-opening store Door opening, turning room and floor requirements
A cluttered but sound shed Tool rack and shelves Suitable fixing points and rated loads

Start with a pile, not a product

Set out the equipment you actually need to store. Separate things used every week from seasonal items. Measure the largest item in its stored position: a mower with its handle folded according to its manual can take a very different space from one left ready to use.

Try arranging the equipment inside a rectangle marked on the ground. Then take the mower out. If you have to move three other things first, the arrangement needs more space or a different door position. Our storage size planner gives a starting estimate; this physical access check still matters.

Don't confuse capacity with fit

Two stores with the same litre capacity can have different shapes. A long handle may not fit in a deep but short box. External measurements tell you whether the building fits the garden; internal measurements tell you whether the contents fit the building. Door openings can be smaller again.

Decide where valuable tools belong

Weather protection and security are different questions. Police.uk advises locking tools away and considering an extra locked box or chain inside a shed. Read the shed security guide before relying on a store's padlock point alone.

If a low box looks suitable, use the storage box measurement guide. For a building you can enter, start with what size shed you need.
