An alarm can draw attention to activity in a shed. Outside lighting can make an approach easier to see. Add them after checking the door, frame and locks, and choose equipment you can maintain and use consistently.
Police.uk suggests considering a battery-operated shed alarm and outside security lighting. Its shed guidance describes alarms that respond to movement or a door opening. That advice doesn't establish the performance of an individual product.
Compare the practical details
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Does it detect movement, door opening or both? | The sensor must suit the layout |
| How is it powered? | Battery replacement or an appropriate power supply is needed |
| How is it armed and disarmed? | You need to use it without leaving the door open unnecessarily |
| Is it only a local siren? | A siren alone doesn't mean anyone receives an alert |
| What environment does the maker permit? | Check temperature and moisture limits |
If a device promises phone alerts, check the connection it needs and whether a subscription is required. Test coverage at the proposed position rather than assuming the house Wi-Fi reaches through the garden.
Think through arrival and departure
Work out where you will stand to disarm the alarm with your hands full. Check how a door sensor will mount without obstructing the door. Follow the manufacturer's test and maintenance procedure, including battery checks.
For a light, identify the area you want to see and where the beam will fall. Consider neighbouring windows and the garden path. If a fixed electrical installation is needed, use a suitably qualified installer rather than improvising outdoor wiring.
No shed or lock is theft-proof. Follow police and Secured by Design advice: fit good locks and hinges, mark and record your tools, and don't leave valuables on show.
The shed security guide puts alarms and lighting into the wider plan. We haven't tested alarm products or compared their detection range, sound output or battery life.
