Shed locks, hasps and hinge fixings explained

Understand the parts of a shed door and the compatibility checks to make before buying security hardware.

Choose hardware for the door and frame you have. The strongest-looking padlock in a shop won't repair a loose staple or damaged fixing point.

Part What it does What to check
Padlock Locks the fastening together Shackle clearance and compatibility with the hasp
Hasp Hinged fastening across the door Suitable mounting surface and covered fixings
Staple Loop that receives the padlock Sound support and compatible fixings
Hinges Support the door Whether exposed fixings need attention

Closed-shackle padlocks

Avon and Somerset Police and Secured by Design recommend considering a closed-shackle padlock with a hasp and staple. A closed-shackle design leaves less of the curved locking bar exposed. It still needs to fit the fastening; a model with insufficient clearance won't close around an oversized staple.

Check both sides of the door

Avon and Somerset Police also lists one-way screws for shed hinges. Before changing fixings, check the manufacturer's instructions and the material supporting the hinge. Don't assume that hardware intended for a timber door is suitable for a thin metal or resin panel.

If you cannot identify a sound mounting point, resolve that before ordering a lock. Avoid buying additional bolts merely to fill every available surface.

Ask for evidence behind security claims

If a listing names a certification, check the specific product and version against the issuing scheme. A logo elsewhere on a manufacturer's website is not evidence that every item in the range has that certification. We don't assign security ratings from photographs or marketing descriptions.

Keep the keys somewhere secure and convenient enough that locking the shed becomes routine. Test the operation after fitting: the door should shut properly and the lock should be accessible without forcing parts together.

No shed or lock is theft-proof. Follow police and Secured by Design advice: fit good locks and hinges, mark and record your tools, and don't leave valuables on show.

Use the security checklist to review the rest of the store.
